Dental Implants

Dental Implants

Dental implants can be used to support a dental bridge or support a stand-alone tooth. Implant dentistry can rebuild an entire mouth, just one dental arch, several missing teeth or just one tooth. Dental Implants can also be used for dentures to hold them firmly in place. Implant dentistry and dental implants include companies as ITI, Straumann, Astra, Nobel Biocare, 3I and a variety of mini dental implants, along with full size shapes and lengths.

Dental Implants vs. Root Canals

The question lies is whether or not you want to try to save your natural tooth or extract the tooth and place an implant. Root canal treatment can save an infected or broken tooth by treating the roots of the tooth. The nerve is removed, the tooth is disinfected, the space is filled and the tooth generally gets a porcelain or gold crown. Root canals have worked very well and have saved many teeth for millions of people. The choice between a dental implant and a root canal must be analyzed for each patient.

Dental Implants in an Hour

Recent advances in dentistry have made it possible to place dental implants immediately after extraction or placing the dental implant in an area where a tooth has been missing for a long period of time. In some situations where the patient is healthy, there is NOT an infection, and there is enough jawbone with good density, the tooth can be extracted, the implant surgically placed and a temporary crown is cemented to the implant on the same visit. Generally, “tooth in an hour” is not a good idea because the implant needs time to integrate with the jawbone which it takes a few months. If the integration process is disturbed, it can cause the implant to fail.

This patient did not like the gap between her front teeth, the size of her two front teeth, nor the black lines near the gum on the left side and how the teeth on her left side are titled inward. The entire upper arch was reconstructed uwith new porcelain that balanced the shapes of her teeth, removed the gap, removed the black lines and removed the tilt in her teeth on the left side. She now has a balanced smile. Unaltered and Untouched Photos by Dr. Sam Muslin, Santa Monica, CA

Dental Implant Parts

There are three parts to a dental implant: the part that is placed inside your jawbone (called the cylinder); the part that is screwed into the cylinder and sticks above the gum line; and the dental porcelain crown that is cemented over the top. For a detailed explanation of the type of dental implant that is best for you, and a video clip to demonstrate the details call for an appointment. Dr. Muslin and his staff can personalize the appointment and discuss your specific dental problems and possible dental solutions.

Dental Implants, Porcelain Crowns and Porcelain Veneers

Dental Implants can be combined with porcelain crowns and porcelain veneers to develop the best possible bite and esthetic balance. The Century City, California area has a wide variety of dentists placing dental implants, but this patient chose to make the drive to Santa Monica for treatment. (Century City is about 7 miles away.) This patient wanted a high level of cosmetic dentistry and was looking to get a balanced smile and close the space between her front teeth, remove the dental bridge with black lines at the gums and place implants on her entire lower left side.

Cosmetic Dentistry and the Balanced Smile

The key to the care is to get the spaces filled, and the sizes of her teeth balanced. Notice that in the after photos, her teeth are whiter, her smile is wider and her entire face is balanced with cosmetic dentistry.
